Why did you make the move to Smart HR?
I wanted a position with a flexible schedule and high-level human resources work. Smart HR was recommended to me by a colleague who had heard wonderful things about the company.
Five years ago, did you think you’d be doing what you’re doing now?
Five years ago I was debating leaving the work force all together. I wanted to continue in human resources but needed a more flexible schedule. I did not imagine that I would be working for a company that would support both my professional and personal needs.
What’s a typical day like for you?
This will depend on the client, but most often it is acting as the main point of contact for any HR issues. This involves email and face to face interactions with employees to disseminate information, answer questions and resolve employee issues. Projects associated with benefits, compensation, workflow management and reporting also take up much of my day.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
I love working for a variety of clients. I have learned about so many new industries as a result of my experience. In addition, Smart HR provides me with a flexible schedule so I am not missing valuable time with my family.
What about the Smart HR model really appeals to you?
I am most attracted to the types of roles Smart HR offers. The model is geared towards providing ongoing support to customers rather than being project based. This allows the consultant to develop relationships with clients and their staff.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to yourself in college?
If I could go back in time, I would advise myself to focus my studies on business skills. I have realized during the course of my career that no matter what your profession, business skills are needed. These skills will enable you to earn respect and provide valuable input at the executive table.
