Every so often, we feature one of our consultants and highlight their story to give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into life at Smart HR. Without further ado, please meet this month’s spotlight consultant, Debbie Sutton.
Name: Debbie Sutton
Years with Smart HR: 3 years
Professional Background in One Sentence: I’m a Human Resources professional with extensive experience working with management and staff in bridging gaps and ensuring the HR Department runs efficiently.
Why did you make the move to Smart HR?
I had been consulting for over 11 years and wanted to continue with another consulting firm. I met with Mark and liked his approach with clients.
Five years ago, did you think you’d be doing what you’re doing now?
Yes, I did. Because I have been doing this for so long, I could not see doing anything else.
What’s a typical day like for you?
Every day starts with a list of “Things to do,” which tends to get pushed aside due to unforeseen issues that come up at the client site.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Being able to enlighten managers and bridge the gap between staff and the management team is very rewarding. It is a great feeling to be an integral part of helping a team communicate better and work efficiently by breaking down their silos.
What about the Smart HR model really appeals to you?
I like the autonomy it provides and the variety of clients you can help. The consultants themselves can be a great resource, which you do not necessarily get heading up an HR Department.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to yourself in college?
I would have told myself to get involved with more internships and network more with professors.
